the group field of the main memory address is decoded and is used to select one tag that corresponds to the block
2.
if the valid bit is set
3.
then the tag is gated out
4.
the tag is compared with the main memory address tag
5.
if they match, the cache block is gated out
6.
the word field selects the specified word from the block
